Spear-headed by the City of College Station, an Animal Control Ordinance Subcommittee is looking for residents input prior to revisions to the current ordinance. The city's ordinance was last updated in 2000. The city is comprised of Brazos County and City of Bryan and City of College Station representatives.

One of the issues up for review is the number of animals allowed in a household. Currently, the ordinance allows households to have up to four cats and dogs. The subcommittee is considering changing it to allow pet owners to have an unlimited number of dogs and cats.

"I think that's a bad idea you can't possibly, if you have 10 pets, you can't possibly provide loving care for every single one of those dogs," said dog owner, Christina Baker.

The subcommittee wants public input on animal restraint, dangerous animals, standards of care, feral cat colonies, safe transport of animals, and restrictions on unauthorized pet sales.

"I really would like some animal cops or something in order to just make sure dogs are treated well," said Baker.

As the number of households grow, the city says it wants to be proactive in making sure all pets have a safe environment. According to American Veterinary Medical Association statistics, pet ownership demographics from College Station showed 14,120 households had pets in 2008. 60% of households owned pets, 38% owner 1 or more pet, and 15% owner 5 or more pets.

"About 60 percent of households have some sort of animal, a dog, a cat, or whatever companion animal they have and so this does potentially touch a lot of people in a place like College Station that could be as many as two to three thousand animals," said College Station council member James Massey.

The last public hearing on the animal control ordinance is scheduled for Thursday night from 6:30-10:30 at the College Station Municipal Court on Krenek Tap Rd. City council members will get recommendations on proposed changes November 23.

oh this is such a great idea, just imagine your neighbor having 20 dogs in the back yard howling and yelping all day and night, not to mention the smell. what about those same 20 dogs in the heat of the summer? lets not forget the cat lady who has 100 cats roaming around her yard. there is no way one could give a loving, caring home to more than a small hand full of animals at one time and give them the attention and love they need and deserve. From a selfish aspect too, I'm sure having a neighbor with 20 dogs will help increase your home value while you're trying to sell it.

"If you live within the city limits, you shouldn't be allowed to have dogs that bark non-stop in your back yard." There are ordinances already to prohibit that; it's just that (like the loud party ordinance), the noise still has to be happening half an hour after you report it when the cop gets around to the low priority call.

Giving up more freedoms. I know, I know, I am about to catch alot of grief from people on here because I am from Madisonville and posting about your local topics. I watched and listened as you held an election over RLC now the city is looking to keep the cameras. For awhile I wondered what made your city officials think they know better than you what you need and want. Now I know. You give them that power. You people are to scared to think for your self. The sqeaky wheel gets greased. That wheel could be broken but your going to grease it to shut it up. You are really going to allow your council to make every decision in your life for you. HOW MANY DOGS YOU CAN OWN. Really. You people deserve what you get. Our city tried to inact a smoking ban and certain animal rules. We told them what we wanted not the other way around.
