The Mosbacher Institute for Trade, Economics and Public Policy at the Bush School, Texas A&M University, honored Joseph M. DePinto, president and CEO of 7-Eleven, Inc., with the 2012 McLane Leadership in Business Award.

Established by Drayton McLane, Jr., a noted entrepreneur and chairman of the McLane Group, a high technology firm, the McLane Leadership in Business Award annually recognizes a prominent individual in the field of business for outstanding contributions in the area of business, public service, or community service at the national level. The award highlights different roles that business plays in maintaining the economic, political, and social vitality of our nation.

The 7-Eleven company is the leader in convenience retailing. Globally, there are approximately 47,600 7-Eleven stores, 9,400 of which are in North America. Under DePinto’s leadership, 7-Eleven has grown dramatically from an organization that began as an ice house in Dallas, Texas, in 1927.

Before being appointed chief executive of 7-Eleven, Inc., in 2005, DePinto was president of GameStop Corporation. He also has held executive positions at PepsiCo, Inc., and Thornton Oil Corporation. In 2010, DePinto was a favorite on CBS’s hit show Undercover Boss.

DePinto serves on a number of corporate and nonprofit boards of directors: 7-Eleven, Brinker International, the Retail Industry Leaders Association, Business Executives for National Security, SMU’s Cox School of Business, Lone Star Big Brothers/Big Sisters, the Command and General Staff College Foundation, and the National Italian American Foundation. He also is a member of the advisory councils for Outlook Leadership, the Pro Players Foundation, the Japan-America Society of Dallas/Fort Worth, and is a Network of Executive Women Champion.

A native of Chicago, Illinois, DePinto earned a bachelor’s degree in engineering management from the United States Military Academy at West Point and a master of business administration from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. He and his wife, Ingrid, and their four sons reside in Southlake, Texas.

The Mosbacher Institute for Trade, Economics and Public Policy at the Bush School of Government and Public Service was founded in October 2009 to produce policy-oriented research in trade, energy, and good governance.
