WATCHES AND WARNINGS

7-year-old Twins Found Living in Filth; Father Arrested

Updated: Sun 4:39 PM, Oct 07, 2012

Seven-year-old twins were found living in filthy living conditions in Bryan Wednesday night, according to Brazos County Sheriff’s Deputies.

“We were aware that Larry Lewis was wanted by College Station PD,” said Brazos County Sheriff Chris Kirk. “Someone very close to them was very concerned, not only about the children but about his mental state.”

Lewis was wanted by College Station Police for stealing thousands of dollars’ worth of jewelry.

Sheriff’s deputies responded to the 1200 block of Steamboat Run to check on the family, but they couldn't find Lewis or his kids anywhere in the main house.

“He doesn't actually live in the house, he lives in a house in the woods behind their house,” said Sheriff Kirk.

Lewis is a field hand on the property and he lives there with his 7-year-old twins.

Deputies believe Lewis fled into the woods when he saw them coming.

“They were sleeping at the time but they were unsupervised,” said Sheriff Kirk. “It was not a very sanitary environment. It was filthy. Not an environment you'd like to see a child raised in.”

Lewis eventually turned himself in to deputies. He has been charged with abandoning a child with intent to return, and felony theft. He bonded out of Brazos County Jail Thursday.

“CPS has a parallel investigation going on and in the interest of those children and we'll make sure that they're cared for,” said Sheriff Kirk.

Sheriff's deputies say the 7-year-old boy and girl were in a relative's custody Thursday. Neighbors say their mother left years ago, so a judge will ultimately decide who will get custody

Public records show Lewis has an extensive criminal history that includes assault and family assault charges.
