Bonfire: Bowen's Burden of Command
While much has been said and written about that collapse of Aggie bonfire, the man at the helm of Texas A&M during that time has, for the most part, chosen not to discuss the incident publicly.

While much has been said and written about that collapse of Aggie bonfire, the man at the helm of Texas A&M during that time has, for the most part, chosen not to discuss the incident publicly.
Dr. Ray Bowen was Texas A&M President in 1999. His leadership and compassion in the days after helped many hearts heal.
Recently, he sat down with KBTX General Manager Mike Wright to reflect and remember the tremendous toll of the burden of command.

It is called TRADITION, just as any other A&M event. It also like our nation as a whole who TRADIONALLY honors many fallen americans EVERY year. And as Jon said A&M has many memorials to honor fallen aggies as well as members of the aggie family are held many times through out the year. I am not a student but I am part of the aggie family. To rosie I was here on the day bonfire fell and you know what I remember the most, It was not the tragic deaths of 12 students but student after student concerned over whether or not bonfire could be rebuilt in time for the game on thanksgiving. And if you don't believe me then maybe you and KBTX should sit down and really go through the archives for that day and see how many times throughout the day or in the paper this was the main concern of this so called close family. And as far as the coverage it has been easy to notice how the Eagle and KBTX has made certain not to bring out the neglect by all involved that lead to this event to start with.

CJ, I take it you are not an aggie? And if you had done your homework you would know that every month Silver Taps is held to honor every aggie that was lost in the previous month, and Muster once a year where all the aggies lost in the previous year are honored. You will not find any other university in Texas and possibly the nation that goes out of their way to honor every former and present student that is lost. And no I am not an aggie but obviously wish I was a part of that bold and honorable family called Texas A&M.
