The Spirit of Aggieland is best described by the Twelfth Man and on this day, the Aggie community came together to attend a candlelight vigil at the site where Aggie Bonfire once stood.
Early Wednesday morning, scores of people stood together as one, they are known the 12th Man...and together, they remember the twelve who lost their lives while carrying on a long-standing and time-honored tradition.
After the stack collapsed ten years ago at 2:42 a-m, there was an immediate outpouring of support, concern and duty to help those who were injured and trapped.
November 18th marks the somber tenth anniversary of Texas A&M University's darkest day.
As concern for those buried beneath the stack's crumpled and toppled logs grew, the need and desire to help those buried under thousands of pounds of debris drove Aggies and emergency responders to tirelessly work, as thousands of worried onlookers stood-by in silent vigil. Just like the 12th Man...they stood. Together, as one they stood...all while waiting to receive word of their fellow Aggies and praying for miracles.
As night turned into day and minutes passed into hours, the word they awaited was an unwelcome one.
One by one the announcements came and as Aggies learned of the deaths, days of mourning consumed the entire Aggie nation. In the blink of an eye, tradition turned into tragedy.
Now ten years later, Aggies still gather at the site of the collapse and hold a candlelight vigil to honor the memory of those who lost their lives. Like in years past, hundreds attended the ceremony.
The early morning service was attended by the friends and family of those who died. Even emergency workers who were on site ten years ago returned to pay their respects.
