A Bryan man was sentenced Thursday to five years in prison for hitting two women on New Year's Eve 2007, killing one of them, then fleeing the scene.

Enrique Ibarra, 42, pleaded guilty to a charge of failure to render aid in an accident involving death.

He was sentenced by District Judge Steve Smith, and faced up to 10 years in prison.

Ibarra was driving his van December 31, 2007 when he hit 28-year-old Yvonne Zaragoza and 30-year-old Ester Gonzales, who were walking on Ursuline Avenue in Bryan.

Zaragoza died, while Gonzales was seriously injured.

Ibarra turned himself into authorities a few days after the accident, after seeing the hit-and-run on the news.

I am the brother of Yvonne Zaragoza, the one that died from this event. My Family has been through alot with this ordeal and no time served will ever be enough to equal the pain and lost that we feel everyday. Those who think that their opinions need to be heard that are negative toward my sister please keep them to yourself. Until he have lost someone that means the world to you, either accidentially or premeditated, you will never know the pain we feel. RIP Yvonne

As a mother who lost her child to a HIT & RUN driver 5 years ago, I am living a life sentence after the driver decided to make a deadly choice. The accused is NOT a victim in the horror at all, HE gets to wake up everyday and knows after he gets out of prison he will live his life as if nothing ever happened, isnt he the lucky one here. The victims and their family are given a life sentence of pain and sorrow and in my case, my 15 year old daughter lost her life. U see...yes it was an accident until he ran, now its an incident. SO, for all of u out there making judgements about something u havent a clue of knowing about, unless u have walked the walk to truly understand the horror of this senseless crime...lets have some empathy for the victims here. MR. Man had 3 priors and ran, doesnt take a genious to see he was drunk and trying to save his own self, instead of stopping, calling for help or even maybe...just maybe stayed with the victims until God took them Home. God Bless them all!

At least this guy was brought to trial. So many drunk driver never see the inside of a courtroom after they have been involed in a 'FATAL ACCIDENT."
