The latest chapter in the red light camera saga is ending.

A hearing was set to begin Friday afternoon in the case of the camera supporters who filed suit against College Station. The two residents who filed the litigation claimed the recent election results to end the program were invalid based on language in the city charter.

But the visiting judge made attorneys on both sides resolve the issue without a hearing.

Afterwards, College Station Mayor Ben White gave the News Three camera a thumbs up. He and the council are clearly glad this issue is resolved for the most part.

Attorneys for both the city and the plaintiffs worked for several hours Friday to reach a compromise.

Late in the afternoon visiting judge Susan Stovall said she was happy to report both sides had reached an agreed upon solution. The attorney representing the city did not give specific details but said the council has put the city back on track to getting rid of the red light camera program.

"That takes a little while because of the contract issues. You can't do that right away but it's on the path to doing that. We're working that out to try to resolve that, get everything resolved without cost to the city. Without years of litigation. Without appeals," said C. Robert Heath.

The council is scheduled to meet Monday morning to agree to the terms of this settlement. Aside from some legal loose ends that need to be tied, the judge said this case is resolved.

No word on when the council will officially terminate its contract with the red light camera company. But don't expect them to come down immediately as they have to give them 60 days notice.

As a person who obeys the law, I get very upset at red light runners, those that speed up on yellow. The money that C.S. station could make on citations would cover 24 manned survaliance off all intersctions. David you got it all wrong buddy. Liberals are the ones that want to control people through government mandates. i.e. health care ,cap and trade the Obama community reinvestment act[stimulus package] and don't forget the cash for clunkers fiasco.

Now when you get caught it will cost you $265 instead of $75 and be criminal instead of civil...way to think this through.
