Strong to severe thunderstorms will be possible, across the Brazos Valley, Saturday afternoon and evening. Winds in excess of 40-60mph are the main concern, within the strongest activity. An isolated, brief tornado threat cannot be ruled out. Heavy rainfall between 1" and 3" has the potential to cause localized flash flooding in a few locations.
Just after 5 p.m. Saturday, Grimes County Sheriff deputies responded to a call that shots had been fired at a residence off FM 39 on Sleepy Hollow Lane.
Grimes County Sheriff, Don Sewell said initial details only revealed that someone had suffered a gunshot wound.
"The information we got was a suspect was on the scene and it was a 357 used and one person was shot in the abdomen," Sowell said.
Officials said Mack Popham was shot by his wife's brother, Paul Pradling from Conroe. Sowell said it appears Popham had been drinking and disclosed to his brother-in-law that he had at one time beat his wife. That led to an argument.
"As the pushing and shoving match continued he grabbed him by his neck and the suspect pulled out a pistol," Sowell said.
Popham was airlifted to Scott and White in Temple, where he underwent surgery late Saturday evening.
Sowell said Pradling remained on scene until Sheriff deputies arrived and was later arrested. He is currently in the Grimes County Jail charged with assault with a deadly weapon.
