PAYNE SPRINGS, Texas -- Authorities say a man with a high-powered rifle shot and killed two Henderson County sheriff's deputies Thursday as they answered a domestic disturbance call.

Another deputy was wounded by the suspect -- who was shot by the officers at the rural home near Payne Springs, about 50 miles southeast of Dallas.

A woman at the residence wasn't hurt.

The wounded deputy and the suspect were flown to East Texas Medical Center in Tyler.

The deputy was in surgery tonight with a broken leg.

McWilliams says the gunman was shot in the side and the arm. He has not yet been charged and is being guarded by deputies.

McWilliams says the shootings happened just hours after all three deputies attended the county's peace officers memorial to honor those slain in the line of duty.

Payne Springs is a community of about 700.
