Hutchison Wants Changes to Immigration Deal

The U.S. Senate is getting more time for debate on a bipartisan compromise that could give millions of unlawful immigrants legal status.

The measure also would tighten border security and workplace enforcement measures.

The Senate will debate the deal this week and return to it after the weeklong Memorial Day holiday break.

Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison of Texas says she'll seek to alter the bill to mandate that illegal immigrants go back to their home countries before gaining legal status.

Under the current proposal, that requirement only applies to heads of households seeking green cards and a path to citizenship.
