Cops' Torch Run Raises Awareness for Special Olympics

Local law enforcement made strides Tuesday to raise awareness for Special Olympics.

The gulf coast leg of the the Texas Law Enforcement Torch Run raced through town. The group will cross the finish line at the University of Texas at Arlington, which is the site of the Special Olympics State Summer Games. The games officially start this Thursday evening.

In Texas, the Law Enforcement Torch Run began in 1985. In 2006, Texas Torch Runners raised more than $75,000.

Special Olympics Texas is a privately funded non-profit organization, providing year-round sports training and athletic competition to 24,675 children and adults with intellectual disabilities in the Lone Star State.
