Tree of Angels Remembers Violence Victims

The holidays can be a time of heartache if someone you love is no longer there. For families of those taken by violence, there's a special place to go where angels live on.
Tuesday night, that place happened to be the Brazos Center where the Brazos County District Attorney's office was hosting this year's Tree of Angels. For the past seven years, families, law enforcement, prosecutors and service agency workers come together to remember loved ones victimized by violent crimes.
For organizers, the timing of the event is no coincidence. "For so many, the holidays are very important and that's where a lot of the memories were," said Victims Assistance Coordinator Melissa Carter. "So it allows them just to place that angel on the tree and remember the good times and the things that were good with their lives."
One by one, the name of each victim is called. Family members then come forward to hang an angel on a Christmas tree. For those families who can't attend, someone else steps forward.
No one ever has to step forward for James and Virginia Davidson. They make the drive from Jarrell, Texas every year to hang an angel for their son, James Jr., who was killed in 2003. For them, it's a small act that keeps his memory alive. "Christmas is our son's favorite time of year so it's special for us," said Virginia Davidson.
Like the Davidsons, many of these families will be here next year, and the year after that. That's because angels live forever, and so do their memories.
