It is the newest craze here in College Station. A yogurt shop built from the idea of A&M students is having incredible success even as the temperature drops around the Brazos Valley.
Spoons frozen yogurt has only been open for a month and a half but it's already getting rave reviews. It's concept isn't anything new, it's just new to College Station.
"It's just self serve yogurt. You get whatever yogurt you would like and whatever toppings you want and you pay by the weight," said Assistant Manager Jason Zimmermann
With flavors like york peppermint patty, candy cane, cake batter and cheesecake, just picking your yogurt is half the battle. After that, it's on to the toppings where you can find fruit, candy, and cereal. Pretty much everything you can imagine as a topping.
"It's healthier. Yogurt is always going to be healthier than just ice cream. You really can't taste the difference in the yogurt. And you can add whatever toppings you want. It makes it feel customized and you make exactly what you wanted," said Zimmermann.
"I mean it's your concoction, its what you want in it. It's great," said A&M student Cindy Steffy.
"It's fun. A fun way to get together and eat and you get what you want," said College Station resident Carey Faber.
"Don't over do it because you'll pay a lot of money like I just did. But other than that, it is a pretty good price," said A&M Consolidated student Kalyan Venkatrha.
But who would come up with such an idea?
"It was actually part of a business fellows project developed by a couple of A&M students last spring. They presented it as a project idea and actually found an investor. He was interested in the project and so it started up pretty quickly from last spring to this fall when we opened up," said Zimmerman.
And with so many Aggies coming to Spoons and seeing a successful business come right out of their campus, well the proof is in the.....yogurt.
"For someone to create and idea like this and to have it become a reality, that is awesome. It really shows that we are here to learn and what we do counts for something and progress into something else, which is really cool," said Steffy.
Spoons is located on Texas Avenue in the Culpepper Plaza, near AT&T and Firehouse Subs.

News flash. This kind of yogurt shop has been around for a long time. There is one in Denton, Texas, that was in place long before these Aggies "came up with this idea". I'm all for it, but please be truthful. They didn't think of it -- they copied the idea.
Like it says, "It's concept isn't anything new, it's just new to College Station." I don't see anything trying to imply that there's never been a yogurt shop or a Spoons anywhere else in the country before. I see some smart students that took a chance to turn a project into a business and were successful. Why do people have to find some way to be so negative or complain about it not being "important news, only local, blah blah blah". Some of us like seeing positive stuff just for fun! What a concept! I for one am looking forward to getting back to town and stopping by this place to see what they're like and wish them lots of luck for the future.
