A man has attempted to rape and burglarize 11 women across Texas. However, those are just the victims authorities know about. Investigators fear some older women targeted by a serial rapist either aren't talking or don't realize their break-in could lead to another attack.
Investigators are now linking the man to a break-in and attempted sexual assault two days before Thanksgiving. It happened in Luling, about an hour east of San Antonio. The victim there, is a 79-year-old woman and fits a pattern investigators across the state are becoming very familiar with.
In Centerville, the city sidewalks are dressed in holiday lights, but there's more in the air here than just the feeling of Christmas.
In this small texas town, the holiday is sharing the spotlight with a man authorities are calling the twilight rapist. He attacked or tried to attack 11 women across six counties. Four, have been in Leon County. One has been in Centerville.
"Everybody's being very cautious and probably a little suspicious of anybody that comes around," said Denece Taylor. Taylor manages Lacey's Grocery & Market. She's lived in Leon County for 30 years. For 30 years, she didn't have to lock her doors.
"Since this happened, if I'm at home watching TV at night, I make sure my front door is locked," said Taylor.
Taylor believes she could defend herself, "but picking on the older people is really upsetting," said Taylor.
However, that's exactly who investigators say the twilight rapist targets: women over 65, who live alone. In most cases authorities say the man breaks into the homes weeks before, then returns early in the morning, cuts phone lines and attacks.
Women in town aren't taking any chances. Since the attacks started in Leon County this summer, Brian Largent says women have been coming to Centerville Building Supply for wasp spray.
"It's more readily available than pepper spray is," said Largent.
That's not the only thing the women are buying. "Security lights, extra door security for their doors, " said Largent. "There's probably been a 50% increase."
Despite the busy holiday season, members of a neighborhood watch in several Leon and Bell County communities have taken to patrolling the streets. The public and peace officers all have the same goal.
"We need to get this guy off the streets," said Leon County Sheriff Jerry Wakefield.
A $5,000 reward is being offered for information that leads to a conviction in this case.
While none of the victims have been able to get a good look at their attacker, Texas Rangers said he is described by some victims to be a dark-skinned male who is between 5'6" and 6'0" tall, with a thin build and short hair.

Have elderly family in Leon County. For the "lady" in Centerville, make a visit to your priest, pastor, etc.-get educated.I know many people in Centerville-I am sure they are appalled at your comments. These PREDATORS DO NOT STOP!Violence tends to escalate/expand solely focused on victimization. Some erroneously believe this is a sexual act.It is pure violence and control. They also tend to stalk the easiest quarry and locations affording the best cover.Sexual PREDATORS are hunters and do NOT see people as human beings. KBTX has done an outstanding job handling a very important news story in a sensitive and responsible manner. The only media outlets in Leon County are weekly newspapers-by the time another attack occurs it could be seven or more days before the public knows. KBTX has always understood their responsibility to rural neighbors. The best deterrent will be an alert and informed public-willing to help their neighbors. Keep the information coming KBTX. Needs to be statewide.
Maybe female isn't a female at all and might be the person committing the rapes and is trying to talk people into just believeing God will keep them safe is they have faith, so he can slip in to do it again (stupid).....Well, the way I see it....He also gave you common sense for a reason. Please use it and keep yourself safe. Please check on your grandmother and make sure nothing has happened to your loved one.
