SAN ANTONIO (AP) - The White House has nominated Steve Murdock, the Texas state demographer, to be the next director of the U.S. Census Bureau.
Murdock is director of the Texas State Data Center and a professor of demographics at the University of Texas at San Antonio.
He declined to comment on the nomination, which was announced by the White House on Monday.
A White House spokesman says it's typical for nominees to refrain from commenting until they've been confirmed by the Senate.
The Census Bureau is a division of the U.S. Department of Commerce. It's the federal agency responsible for counting and analyzing data about the nation's people and economy.
Governor Rick Perry named Murdock the state demographer in 2001.
