Perry Names Newby New Chief of Staff

Austin -- Governor Rick Perry's general counsel will take over as his chief of staff July 1.

Brian Newby will replace Dierdre Delisi, who announced her departure Tuesday. Newby has been with Perry as general counsel since November 2004.

A spokesman for Perry says Newby is believed to be the first black chief of staff for a Texas governor.

Perry also says that two advisers, Kathy Walt and Kris Heckmann, will serve as deputy chiefs of staff.

Walt has been in Perry's administration since December 2000 as his press secretary and most recently as senior adviser.

Heckmann has served as deputy legislative director and an adviser to the governor on transportation policy.
