EL PASO, Texas (AP) - A would-be immigrant from Mexico is dead in a border incident in El Paso.
It started shortly after noon Wednesday when a border camera spotted three men coming through a hole in a fence. When Border Patrol agents arrived, one of the men fell into a canal and was quickly dragged under by the fast-moving water.
One of the agents who tried to save the man was startled when one of the other men, believed to be the smuggler, started throwing rocks at him. One rock caught the agent in the head, opening up a three-inch gash.
When the agent opened fire, the two men fled back into Mexico.
The man who was swept away drowned. His body was recovered from the canal four and a-half miles from where he fell in.
