Unauthorized Company Tries to Solicit to Area Businesses
Buyer Beware! Several Brazos Valley businesses want to warn others about a business asking for donations to help out A&M Consolidated High School's sports teams. The problem is, the high school says they haven't authorized one particular company to solicit funds on their behalf.

Between running a business and acting as A&M Consolidated High School's Parent-Teacher Organization, Kristi Yancy says she is usually very busy. Tuesday afternoon she says she received an out of ordinary phone call from a woman claiming to work for Jam Sports Marketing.
"She instantly went into a spill about needing sponsors for the back of t-shirts, and it'll benefit the athletes at the school and would I be interested in the last spot remaining," said Yancy.
Yancy said the woman was unable to give her an answer when asked what sports team she was seeking sponsorship. Yancy said that's when a red flag went up in her mind, so she told the woman she wasn't interested in making a purchase.
"I'm the President of the PTO and I haven't heard of you and you can't give me the name of a group you're affiliated with," Yancy said she told the caller.
Yancy said she called A&M Consolidated High School and told the coaches about the call she had received. Yancy learned Jam Sports Marketing was not authorized to solicit on behalf of the school.
Kathy Kothman handles book keeping for a College Station transmission company. The owner of the company told Kothmann a representative from Jam Sports Marketing called seeking funds, but was told to call back when Kothmann was in the office. Kothmann said she went online to look at Jam Sports Marketing and it appeared credible, so when the representative called back she didn't have any reason to think the company wasn't legitimate.
"She gave me a name who is head of the cheer team and so that sounded reasonable, and then she gave me a website to look at. So I looked at the website, very good website," said Kothmann.
Kothmann said she and the caller discussed logos and t-shirt designs. Kothmann said she was even asked to choose a code word so that Jam Sports Marketing would know they were communicating with her in the future. Kothmann said the caller offered a $50 discount if she purchased, so Kothmann decided to give the caller her credit card number. Kothmann said she authorized $225.
"She said okay and then she gave me all this follow-up stufff, and said it should be there by Friday and all about the proofs and everything. I mean she sounded very, very, very legit," said Kothmann.
Not too long after she finished the transaction, Kothmann said she received a call from Yancy. Yancy told Kothmann the company she just purchased from was not authorized to solicit on behalf of the school. Kothmann says she cancelled her credit card immediately.
"I should have checked the Better Business Bureau, but with this company I did not do that. If I had done that I would have found out they had lots of complaints," said Kothmann.
According to the Better Business Bureau website, Jam Sports Marketing has received 14 complaints in the last 12 months. The company's BBB file was opened in February 2007. Jam Sports Marketing is not an accredited BBB company and also received a BBB "F" rating.
News 3 contacted Jam Sports Marketing Thursday and asked to speak to the person in charge. We were transferred to a person named Lauren Edison. After asking Edison her response to claims that they were representing A&M Consolidated High School, said her company was definitely handling the matter with the school. Edison went on to say that she had no statement for the TV station, and then she hung up the phone.
Meanwhile, Yancy said she wants all businesses to know Jam Sports Marketing is not authorized to solicit on behalf of A&M Consolidated High School. In a few months, A&M Consolidated High School's PTO will send letters to businesses requesting donations for it's post Prom fundraiser. The PTO hopes this incident doesn't deter any future giving.

This also happened to my company, almost exactly the same way. I have been fighting this same battle for over 6 months with them. I purchased a 3x3 ad for our Football T-Shirts in Comal ISD and needless to say that the shirts were never delivered to the school, the school never authorized them to solicit on their behalf. After months of phone calls/emails, I finally got Lauren Edison, Public Relations Supervisor on the phone. I have an email from her stating I will be issued a refund within 6 weeks. That was in September 2009 and well I'm still waiting for it. Well now they wont even take my calls or emails, wont respond to the claim I filed with the BBB, and I feel this is a total loss. I have also wrote to Congressman Joe Barton, to let him know what is going on in that area. My goal to responding to your story is that I dont want this to happen to another company, I dont want companies to think this was a one time issue. BEWARE of Jam Sports Marketing, they are scamming you.
Me again- since starting my business last Oct., I receive an unbelievable amount of calls from people trying to sell me stuff. When I want to say no, I try being real nice, thinking they've got a family to support. So I almost feel bad. Forget it, I'll try being blunt from now on. Also, why are new business #'s given out (by the County Clerk or State Comptroller) BEFORE we even really get started?
