Washington County Road Project Draws Debate

There is little argument it needs to be done. But there is growing disagreement over how to pay for it.

The intersection of Highway 290 and FM 577 in Washington County has long been considered a dangerous crossing for motorists. The Texas Department of Transportation wants to give it a $44 million safety upgrade, but only if Washington County and Brenham contribute $15 million each.

Those in favor of the proposal point out that the state would refund the city and county. They also argue it's the only way TxDOT will agree to do the project in the near future. Opponents say the deal should not require local tax dollars.
