An upcoming vote by the Bryan city council could pave the way for a new home for the Boys and Girls Club.

The council will vote Tuesday on donating to the group 6.5 acres of property at Beck and Cedar Streets. Boys and Girls Club President Ron Rolett says the organization is planning a 20,000-40,000 sq. ft. facility which would include new offices, athletic facilities and more parking.

He says once completed, the plan is to move the club from its current home on William J. Bryan to the new facility.

The vote is about moving an organization to better meet the needs of young people in the community. It is not about creating a gateway to downtown. I do not see how you can think helping an organization like the Boys and Girls Club better serve our youth is making Beck Street the main entrance to downtown.

Why donate it? If the city is hurting for money and the school is going to have to cut programs, charge them at least half the cost of the land. Some people in Bryan want to make Beck street and main entrance to Bryan. If they get their way, the land will be even more valuable. Beck should not be considered a main entrance into downtown. More people travel 6 and take William Joel downtown from the post office.
