Migraine headaches are most common in people who are between 30 and 39 and most of those started suffering from the condition before they even turned 20.
Migraines are chronic headaches that can cause significant pain for hours or even days. For many people, symptoms can be so severe that all they can think about is finding a dark, quiet place to lie down.
In women, hormones can play a factor, with fluctuations in estrogen causing the headaches.
Some migraines appear to be triggered by certain foods. Common offenders include alcohol, especially beer and red wine; aged cheeses, chocolate, aspartame and overuse of caffeine.
Stress related to work or problems at home can also ignite migraines. Bright lights and sun glare can produce migraines, as can loud sounds.
Not enough sleep or even getting too much sleep can serve as a trigger for migraine attacks in some individuals.
Also a change of weather or barometric pressure can prompt a migraine and certain medications can aggravate migraines.
Neurologist, Kimberly Oas says, "What can be significant about migraine is that it can be very disabling and affect their ability to function in that way. This is the headache patient that usually seeks care."
Although there's no true migraine cure, medications can help reduce the frequency and severity of migraines.
The right medications combined with some lifestyle changes may make a tremendous difference.
