TYLER, Texas (AP) - An East Texas woman accused of strangling her 2-year-old son has been charged with capital murder.
Tyler police say 39-year-old Catherine Alana Stevens confessed to strangling her child.
Police responded to a call on Sunday that there was an unconscious child at Stevens' home. The child was taken to East Texas Medical Center and pronounced dead.
Police Chief Gary Swindle said officers had been dispatched to the home a number of times.
But a spokeswoman for the Texas Department of Family and Child Protective Services told the Tyler Morning Telegraph that the agency conducted an investigation at the Stevens' home 14 months ago and found the situation was not dangerous.
Stevens remains under psychiatric care in the Smith County Jail, where she's being held on one (M) million dollars bond.
The child's body has been taken to Dallas for an autopsy.
