Imagine being able to download a full length movie onto your computer in less than 5 minutes or e-mailing hundreds of pictures of your grandchildren in one second.
These are just some of the possibilities with Google's new Fiber Network and they're looking for communities like Bryan-College Station to launch their experiment.
The fiber network will be up to 100 times faster than what most of us are used to.
Realtor Carolyn Pinson relies on the internet for 80 percent of her business.
"It's way too time consuming right now," Pinson said.
She said she would love a faster connection.
"We could do virtual tours of our homes that are for sale, there's just a lot we could do with something that fast," she added.
She said her internet is already pretty fast but she still spends hours each week uploading and managing pictures of properties.
"90 percent of the students wanting to rent they are long distance and want pictures," Pinson said.
James Kelly, a product manager with Google, invites the public to nominate their city for the project.
"We plan to provide fiber to the home service with speeds up to 1 GB per second for at least 50,000 and potentially up to 500,000 people," Kelly said, on a YouTube video.
Once a community is selected, Google said they will pay the cost of constructing the network and they will offer their service at competitive prices.
The network will also be open to competitors to provide their own access.
"It's a long shot, we were talking about it earlier but hey why not? Why not the Research Valley for this effort," said Todd McDaniel, President and CEO of the Research Valley Partnership.
He said a grassroots movement on Facebook is already under way encouraging Google to consider Bryan-College Station as the test tube for the experiment.
"Having this infrastructure would certainly put us on the map as a place where you have literally, the leading edge of telecommunications infrastructure," McDaniel.
"I certainly hope they choose this area, as always it's a good area with the college here and everything, you just can't go wrong choosing Bryan-College Station for the area," Pinson said.
But that decision rests ultimately in the hands of Google.
Here is how current internet connections in our area compare...
Suddenlink offers connections of up to 20 megabits per second,
Verizon Fios offers up to 50 megabits per second, but it's only available in a few limited locations in Bryan-College Station, we are told by the company.
Google Fiber Network will offer up to 1 gigabit or 1,000 megabits per second.
Bryan's Fibertown utilizes a cutting edge network that has connections up to ten gigabits per second but those super speeds are for industry only.
If you'd like to nominate your city for the project the deadline on the Google website is March 26th.
