"No other job prepares you for working in the post office," said Wellborn Postmaster Mattie Carter.

Carter has been working for the post office for almost 30 years. For the last five, she's been the postmaster at the Wellborn office and it's a job she genuinely enjoys.

"I've put my two kids through Texas A&M. So the post office has afforded me a great opportunity to take care of my family," said Carter.

But the day Mattie got the job in Wellborn, it wasn't the only life changing news she received.

"(The) same day I was appointed postmaster here is the same day I found out I had breast cancer. I did get my mammogram every year so when I went in for my yearly checkup, that's when my doctor found it. It was really tough at times but if you catch it early, you can be cured of it," said Carter.

Mattie's cancer has been in remission for two years.

"I feel like God brought me through this for a reason. And that reason is for me to help other women get through the same thing that I went through," said Carter

But that's not the only way Mattie is giving back. The North Bryan Community Center is very dear to her heart and she volunteers there on a regular basis.

"To me, this is me giving back to help someone else's child because they helped me with my kids," said Carter.

Tutoring children and teaching them the importance of black history month is an important lesson to Mattie.

"If you don't know where you've been, than how do you know where you are going? So I think it's important. It's an important part of history. I'm happy that I am where I am today and I know I didn't get here by myself. I would say it's a wonderful life. This is a wonderful life," said Carter.

I really enjoyed this story on Mrs. Robinson. She has inspired me to also give back and help kids once my child has completed his education. She is also a role model for women who are currently or may battle breast cancer in the future. What a lovely person, please continue to share yourself with the community.
