A Brazos County jury returned a guilty verdict Monday in the trial of a registered sex offender charged with sexually assaulting a 13-month old baby.
Jurors took only about 30 minutes to sentence Jerry Rangel to life in prison.
Rangel, 24, was arrested in March 2006. Police say he sexually assaulted his girlfriend's daughter after the child was left in his care.
Rangel, a sex offender from Arlington, was keeping the woman's other two children at the time of the attack.
The case went to the jury on Friday with deliberations beginning about 4 p.m. Jurors deliberated until about 8 p.m. before leaving for the weekend.
Deliberations resumed about 8:45 a.m., Monday. Jurors returned with a verdict about 9:45 a.m., finding Rangel guilty of injury to a child and aggravated sexual assault of a child.
The trial immediately entered the punishment phase with both sides wrapping up their presentations Monday afternoon.
Rangel must serve at least 30 years before he will be eligible for parole.

Life in prison = being supported by my tax money. He will get food & have a place to sleep for the rest of his life. This is much too lenient a sentence for this type of scum.
