HOUSTON (AP) - A man was killed and a Houston police officer was wounded in a shooting that occurred when the man threatened officers with a pipe.
A police spokesman says the shooting occurred Saturday night after police responded to a call from a woman who said her son had threatened her with a knife. The wounded officer was struck by a gunshot fired by another officer. His injury was not life threatening.
Thirty-nine-year-old Steven Guillory, who carried a pipe with a chunk of concrete at its base, started pummeling the windshield and windows of the patrol car with the pipe and made threatening statements to officers.
Family members were outraged by the death, and community activist Quannel X questioned why a critical response team wasn't called to the scene. They say the man was a paranoid schizophrenic who had been in and out of treatment much of his life.
Police said in a statement last night that there was no opportunity during the incident for an intervention team to become involved. They also stressed the need for more mental health professionals and earlier intervention before police involvement.
