The City of College Station wants to learn more about Google's new high-speed, fiber optic internet service.
It wants residents to take a one-question survey asking if College Station should volunteer as a trial location for the new network.
In recent weeks we've told you about Google's plans to construct a network that will provide downloads up to 100 times faster than currently available to a community of 50,000 to 500,000 people.
The deadline for applications to Google is March 26.
A link to the survey is on this webpage from the City of College Station.

Yes Please! And it's not 10 times faster, try 100 times faster. Also, I agree with Dawn, why are we debating this and not pursuing it full force? Someone wants to come in and dramatically improve our infrastructure on their dime, hmmm I don't know... tough choice.
@Roger On Google's site, they mention that they will become an Internet Service Provider, but encourage competition: Google will make their fiber network "open access" which means that other ISP's, like Suddenlink or Verizon, can use Google's fiber network to offer Internet access to people. Landline phone service works much like this. The same wire comes from the pole to your house, but you can get service from many different companies. This will improve the quality of Internet access, increase the choices of Internet Service Providers, and create new jobs in College Station. I encourage everyone to support this initiative.
Are they going to provide a faster connection to an Internet Service Provider or are they going to be the ISP? If they are going to be the ISP what will they offer? Do they offer news groups and email other than their own email web based? Who will be allowed to connect? If I remember correctly, Bryan already has a ring of fiber optical cable running around it and they are using that as a selling point which might help them gain some of the medical schools and technical companies. Is College Station going to try to compete with Bryan or are the twin cities going to try to develop complementary developmental programs? What areas of its' economy does College Station want to develop and what infrastructure does that require? How do the medical facilities in the cities plan to work together in the future as each city has a hospital and multiple emergency and urgent care facilities. Is CS going to continue developing musical areas requiring high quality broadcast? Film work? Art? Broadcast?
