Closing arguments in the murder trial of a local Marine, Ronald Johnson Jr., began 8 a.m. Wednesday. A Brazos County jury returned a not guilty verdict on two charges around 4:10 p.m. Wednesday.

Johnson, 26, was also charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in connection with the stabbing of twin brothers during a Northgate bar fight in 2007. Jonathan Bailey was killed in the altercation while Janson Bailey was wounded.

Police say the brothers were fighting another man outside the V-Bar when Johnson came to the aid of that person. During the scuffle, Johnson allegedly pulled out his pocket knife and stabbed the brothers.
If convicted of murder, Johnson could have faced up to life in prison. Aggravated assault carries a penalty of 2-20 years.

If Beaumont Ag is correct, I suspect that the survivor will think twice before he starts another fight with a stranger. That's the thing about strangers. When you pick on one, you never know what his background is and what he might be capable of. Looks can be deceiving. Sometimes a bully bites off more than he can chew. For some reason you never seem to hear about these bullies going to Karate schools and starting fights. I wonder why that is.

To anonymous @3:23PM: The only thing Mr. Johnson should have been charged with (after receiving the Man of the Year award) is the responsibility of selecting someone to finish the job he started. The Bryan College Station Eagle deserves to be upbraided for incomplete coverage of this incident. I've always liked and respected District Attorney Bill Turner but after this I think he should be compelled to explain why any charges were filed against Mr. Johnson in the first place. Does anyone know how to find the identities of the members of the Grand Jury who decided to prosecute? Yet no charges of assault against the perpetrators of this outrage (Janson Bailey and his 'Friends'). After the obvious collusion from the DA's office in the cover up of Lindsey Walters brutal murder by Alma Martinez and now this, it may be time for a new District Attorney.

The Bailey brothers had a reputation in Beaumont as being obnoxious and having a knack for starting problems. I guarantee you they started this fight.
