CS Parents Sound Off About Future School Rezoning
The lines haven't been drawn yet, but College Station parents on both sides of the school rezoning issue are sounding off.

The last time College Station I.S.D. school board held community discussions about redrawing school attendance lines was in 2008. Creekview Elementary later opened in August 2008. Public input concerning rezoning was also given in 2004 prior to the August 2005 opening of Forest Ridge Elementary. In May 2009, voters passed a bond issue to build Greens Prairie Elementary and College Station High School. The school district says the new schools came about because of a population boom. Thursday, the school board held a public forum to gather parent's input about creating new school attendance lines.
"I just don't want to rock the boat for something that's worked out beyond expectations for us and our family by having to make that tough decision to move to a different school," said one parent.
More than fifty parents attended Thursday's public forum. More than a dozen expressed their opinions about rezoning.
"We bought our house specifically to keep our kids in Pebble Creek Elementary. Sometimes you pay a premium for that, so it'd be nice if you take that into account. It seems if the problem is an influx of new homeowners and new students, that over time if you took into account grandfathering, you'd solve all the problems," said one parent.
"We have an obligation as parents, as teachers, as school board members, as school district administrators to not just provide nice schools for our kids to go to, but schools that are easy for our kids to transition into," said another parent.
Anne Werszhky has a third grader and kindergartener who attend Rock Prairie Elementary. Werszhky said she is pleased with all College Station schools.
"We move around a lot. We're military and this is the first time I have felt comfortable not having to worry about where my kids are going to go to school," said Werszhky.
In August 2010, the school board will present the new school attendance zones. Community input and adoption of the new zones will occur before the new zones take effect in August 2011.
Greens Prairie Elementary will offer Headstart through fourth grade, and will open in August 2011. College Station High School will open in August 2012.

No matter what any of you say, it wont make a difference. It all comes down to funding and how many disadvantaged kids live in that area, how many ethnic kids are in that area. That is how they draw the lines.
I have seen this in other areas - in Austin for example, and how it can go badly. Austin switched to neighborhood schools at the elementary level and that contributed to the overall decline of academic achievement. This was done so that AISD could save money on bussing. They put those dollars in the poorer neighborhood schools, and those schools did worse despite the extra dollars which did NOT attract better teachers. Bottom line, in my opinion, children learn from their parents, their teachers, and each other. Part of learning from each other is sharing the experiences that some have by virtue of the good fortune of their family's stability, income, and ability to expose their children to museums, travel, etc. Sure, we all want our children to walk to school right down the street, but is that the best thing for ALL of our children? Things are not always as simple as they seem. Sometimes even our children have to sacrifice for the greater good. Just my opinion.
Anonymous can you be more specific and tell us what problems exist in some schools. I'm really curious to know what you are talking about.
