Since Wednesday, Texas Task Force 1 has deployed two swift water rescue boat squads to the San Antonio and Bexar County region in anticipation of wide-area flooding and swift water incidents due to heavy rainfall.

Additionally, a U.S. Coast Guard search and rescue helicopter with a swimmer team, and three Texas Air National Guard helicopters have also been deployed to San Antonio area.

Meanwhile, six additional TX-TF1 swift water rescue squads were activated Thursday by the Governor’s Division of Emergency Management and remain on standby in College Station until further notice. These six boat squads are designated as a water task force and include elements of command, planning and logistics.

Heavy rainfall is expected to continue over widespread areas of the state for at least the next three days. Along the Texas coast, up to three inches of rain per hour has been experienced.

Officials with Texas Task Force 1 are urging drivers to observe all road closures and traffic barriers. The state of Texas has the most swift water deaths each year due to flash flooding, many of which are attributed to motorists attempting to pass though low-water rossings.

Texas Task Force 1 is sponsored by the Texas Engineering Extension Service , or TEEX, and is comprised of more than 300 personnel representing more than 60 jurisdictions and agencies from across the Texas.

TEEX, a member of The Texas A&M University System, offers hands-on, customized first responder training, homeland security exercises, technical assistance and technology transfer services impacting Texas and beyond. TEEX programs include fire services, homeland security, law enforcement, public works, safety and health, search and rescue, and economic solutions.
