Concern Expressed About Construction At University and Copperfield
Since Wednesday's traffic accident on University Drive that left a Bryan teen dead, many people have expressed concerns about the intersection where the wreck happened. Some say construction makes the area a dangerous drive, while others say high speeds are to blame.

By now motorists who frequently travel on University Drive and Copperfield Drive are probably familiar with construction in the area. The project is expected to be complete in May. Construction to to install traffic signals and left turns at the intersection began January 25. It's a safety makeover motorists say is long overdue. Since 2004, the Texas Department of Transportation reports 38 collisions at the University Drive and Copperfield Drive intersection. Wednesday, a wreck at the intersection killed 16-year-old Lauren Landmark. The vehicle Landmark was driving collided with a pickup truck. The collision left three others injured.

College Station Police say it could be weeks before the exact cause of Wednesday's accident is known. But some motorists say the construction project that will eventually make the area safer, is actually making the already dangerous intersection even more dangerous.

"With all the barricades up it makes it harder to see around you. You have to pull up further just to see if there's anybody coming or to turnout," said Bryan resident, Angela Gusewelle.

Gusewelle has lived in the subdivision near the Copperfield Drive and University Drive intersection for a decade. She doesn't blame construction for Wednesday's accident, but says construction has obstructed her view when driving in the intersection.

News 3 decided to get behind the wheel and drive south on Copperfield Drive towards the University Drive intersection. When we stopped at the white line where the stop sign was located, it was difficult to see traffic traveling east on University Drive without moving past a construction sign.

"There's people driving so fast. I've seen people turn out and they don't even realize somebody's coming and almost get hit," said Gusewelle.

Cody Stratton has lived in the Crescent Pointe neighborhood near the University Drive and Copperfield Drive intersection for three years. He said he's witnessed several accidents at the intersection prior to construction, and it's the responsibility of motorists to make the area safer.

"I think people should slow down and actually look at the signs. People drive way too fast coming through this intersection," said Stratton.

College Station Police Department's traffic enforcement division said they were aware of issues at the intersection mostly because of distracted drivers.

"Our traffic section has been over here due to some concerns and there were issues with yielding the right of way and disobeying the stop signs. Speed not so much because there is a lot of traffic stopping and slowing to come to the nearby businesses." said Sgt. Calder Lively with the College Station Police Department.

Stratton offered his solution to ensure motorists slow down and pay attention to the road.

"Put a cop here day and night, just someone watching this area. It'll make people slow down, it would help a lot," said Stratton.

To Work Zone Accident Investigator: Centrifugal force is more of a feeling than an actual force. I think you mean "Centripetal" force as that is the only force that would actually be affecting the care. Are you an actual investigator? and if so, do they teach basic physics before you become one?

"So, if everything was copastetic and up to standard, why was there drastic changes to the barrel and signage arrangement?" Possibly because the concrete had set and could now be driven upon? The same thing (construction barrels and blocking sawhourses and detour signs just "went away" overnight) happened earlier this week at Welborn and Rock Prairie, and there weren't any accidents THERE that I know of...

To Accident Investigator - You may say the barrels and signage were within MUTCD standards, but I find it incredulous that the morning after the accident the barrels in the eastbound shoulder were removed, the road block signs were moved back away from the intersection, and suddenly construction continued in earnest. I would say the construction company and city were trying real hard to change the scenery in wake of a pending lawsuit. So, if everything was copastetic and up to standard, why was there drastic changes to the barrel and signage arrangement?
