"Open When Johnny Can Read" isn't a big budget Hollywood film. It's a simple independent venture with some extreme Texas connections.

"We want this to be a very personal movie. We want it to be made in Texas by Texans, something that people can really get behind and enjoy," said Writer/Director Matthew Griffin.

Griffin comes from a family of Aggies and his movie has gotten a lot of attention here in the Brazos Valley.

"We're really excited about all the people in Bryan/College Station that have jumped on and are big fans. It's a city that has supported the film a whole lot," said Griffin.

Part of the reason for all of the support is local actress Tammy Jackson, who plays a major role in the film.

"She has only done stage acting in the past and you would not be able to tell from the things that we've shot so far," said Griffin.

Another factor is the way Matthew is promoting the film. Everything from auditions to production footage is being shared with fans over social sites like Facebook and Youtube.

"It's a very different approach from the past where everything is very close to the vest and everything is secretive. We're not like that at all. We want people to be involved in everything we do and see what we do and be excited about the film," said Griffin.
