State of Emergency Declared for Texas Pre-Dean

CRAWFORD, Texas -- President Bush has signed a pre-landfall emergency disaster declaration for Texas.

The declaration will allow federal equipment and supplies to be moved in now, ahead of approaching Hurricane Dean, a White House spokesman says.

Governor Rick Perry asked for the declaration Friday night and Bush approved it at his ranch in Crawford, Texas, where he's currently vacationing.

Parts of the state are still trying to dry out from the remnants of Tropical Storm Erin.

At least six deaths this week are blamed on Erin's thunderstorms last week. One person remains missing.

Meanwhile, Dean is picking up strength as it makes its way through the Caribbean.

Forecasters say Dean could threaten the United States by Wednesday and possibly steer into the Gulf of Mexico, with its 4,000 oil and gas platforms.
