INVERNESS, Fla. (AP) - The man who kidnapped a little girl from her bedroom, raped her and later buried her alive is to be sentenced today.
A Florida jury recommended on a 10-2 vote that John Couey be executed for the murder of nine-year-old Jessica Lunsford but the judge has the final word.
The 49-year-old man thinks the judge already has made up his mind. The St. Petersburg Times reports Couey told his aunt he expects to be sentenced to death. The newspaper published excerpts from a jailhouse conversation that was recorded.
At one point in their talk, Couey expresses regret, telling his aunt, "I kick myself in the butt a hundred times a day," adding, "I just keep asking myself, why were you so stupid?" He also tells her he wants to be cremated.
