It may be America's newest drinking game: vodka eyeballing. Partiers take a shot or pour directly from the bottle into an eye.

Some believe the mucus membranes around the eyes allow the alcohol to be absorbed faster, but Gina Neuendorff with the Brazos Valley Council on Alcohol and Substance abuse said that may not be the case.

"When everything becomes inflamed, it's not going to absorb as well," said Neuendorff.

What's not disputed, is the fact that alcohol has no place near the eyes.

"Vodka is 40-50% pure alcohol, pure ethanol so putting that into your eyeball would be like the equivalent of putting paint thinner into your eye," said Neuendorff.

Eye balling could also lead to permanent damage.

"Weeping eye and then other people that had been doing it actually had loss of vision," said Neuendorff.

Although a counselor said it had come up in a group discussion with patients, employees at BVCASA don't know how widely practiced eye balling is in the Brazos Valley yet.

It seems to have started in Europe. Videos showing eye balling at parties there have been on YouTube for several years, but now copycat videos from the United States are making their way online.

"It gets to be a little fad on the internet and then it gets to be a little following for that particular trend and then it just grows in popularity," said Neuendorff.

However, anyone who thinks the drinking game looks fun should watch how the videos end. The only people who seem to be enjoying eye balling aren't doing it themselves.
