According to TxDOT, Highway 6 has reopened following a gas leak near Jones Creek in South Brazos County.
Reports from the scene early Saturday had the leak capped.
Brazos County's emergency management coordinator, Chuck Frazier, says the leak happened in a construction incident. Major roadwork has been ongoing on Highway 6 as part of the TxDOT's biggest project in the history of the Bryan District. It is unknown if work on that project or another was the cause of the leak.
Frazier says residents in the area have been notified, and some have been evacuated. The Red Cross arranged for rooms for the families evacuated. Many could be seen standing alongside the highway as crews worked the scene.
Southbound traffic was being detoured at FM 159, with northbound drivers being detoured at Wellborn Road (FM 2154). Message boards were in place to inform drivers of the situation.
