Jury Selected in Sect Leader's Trial

ST. GEORGE, Utah — The jury has been selected in the trial of polygamist sect leader Warren Jeffs.

Seven women and five men were picked this morning in the final round of jury selection. Four of the jurors will be alternates and eight will decide the case against Jeffs.

Opening statements are scheduled to start this afternoon. It took three and a half days for prosecutors, defense attorneys and the judge to agree on who will sit on the jury.

Jeffs is the leader of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He is charged with rape by accomplice for his role in the arranged marriage of a 14-year-old girl to her 19-year-old cousin.

If convicted, the 51-year-old Jeffs, could spend the rest of his life in jail.

The sect has a West Texas retreat near Eldorado.
