Bryan Firefighters rescue a mother and child from a burning apartment and evacuate several other residents.
Bryan Fire Department Battalion Chief Fred Taylor says firefighters responded to a structure fire call on Sunday afternoon. Once on scene, rescuers observed flames coming from an upstairs unit at the Briar Oaks Townhomes in the 1800 block of Briar Oaks.
Authorities learned two people were believed to have still been inside the unit. A two-front entry was made inside the residence by rescuers from the outside stairs and the window.
Taylor says firefighters discovered a female adult in the townhome. Minutes later, they found a small child hiding under a bed in one of the bedrooms.
Both the woman and child were transported to St. Joseph Regional Health Center in Bryan. The victims' names and possible injuries are not being released.
Several residents in three to four units close to the burning unit were evacuated and possibly displaced by the fire. An official with the Briar Oaks Townhomes management office informed those residents to contact On-Line Real Estate's Leasing Office for relocation information and for help from the Red Cross.
Bryan Fire Investigators are currently investigating what may have caused the fire.
