As the cost of tuition continues to go up, all over the country, college students may get a break on textbook expenses.

The Higher Education Opportunity Act requires colleges release the list of books during class registration. The sooner students get the names of books, the sooner they can shop around.

"I am kind of broke right now, as a college student," said Haley Joins.

Joins just moved into town. She's a transfer student on a mission to get the best book deals she can find.

"I am taking four classes," said Joins. "I only need to buy one book, but that wasn't out yet. They hadn't released that information."

The law that goes into effect this month, could help in her search and help her save money along the way.

"I look online sometimes but, it is hard to find them, said Joins. "Even if you do find them, they are good prices but, they may not get here in time, if you need them for school."

David Schwarz manages a bookstore in College Station. He says he doesn't think the law will hurt his business, because his store doesn't wait until the last minute to release the list of books. He says that textbook lists start coming in as early as April.

"As soon as we get the information, provided their professor doesn't change it, that should be the information they need to purchase the book," said Schwarz.

He says once the lists are set, the store can begin ordering books to sell both in the store and online. The plan is to provide competitive pricing to keep students coming back.

"We actually have links to Half.com and Amazon.com on our website," said Schwarz.

The more information that's disclosed about the books helps ensure students and professors are all the same page.

A provision in the Higher Education Opportunity Act will also require textbook publishers to reveal copyright dates of the last three editions and a description of the changes. If there's little change in the older editions, students can choose to buy those instead.

I agreed that the textbook prices are skyrocketing and some of my textbooks cost over $230! I found a website that saved me huge money, Dealoz.com It compares 200 book prices and provides free coupons. The cool thing about it is that I don't need to wait in line to buy textbooks at school. This website even provides LiveChat to help you while you shop online.
