GALVESTON, Texas (AP) Some ecological experts fear the 168,000 gallons of oil spilled a week ago in Galveston Bay and now drifting south in the Gulf of Mexico could have lasting effects on the undersea ecosystem.
Texas A&M-Galveston marine biology professor Antionetta Quigg says based on previous studies, the oil has been found to be toxic. And she tells The Galveston County Daily News that plankton that serves as fish food becomes toxic too, meaning fish in polluted water get a "double hit" from oil both in their living environment and their food.
The oil from a barge was released into the water March 22 when the barge and a ship collided in the Houston Ship Channel.
