Hundreds of Texas A&M students are set to plant thousands of trees at fire-ravaged Bastrop State Park this month.
The Texas A&M Forest Service said in a release Monday that about 800 students will begin planting 30,000 pine seedlings Saturday morning. Their effort will continue Sunday and continue the following weekend.
Aggie Replant, a student environmental organization, will get help from the Texas Forest Service to ensure the seedlings are planted correctly.
The historic wildfires in 2011 claimed 95 percent of the park's trees, destroyed nearly 1,700 homes and burned 33,000 acres.
Six million trees are to be planted in the park over the next several years but it could be at least 30 years before the park's forest again resembles one.
