COLLEGE STATION A&M Consolidated senior FFA members David Buxkemper, Mason Gold , Dustin McGee and Nick Raley recently placed second in the Area 3 FFA Tractor Technician contest held at Sam Houston State University.
The second place finish out of 11 total teams earned the foursome the opportunity to compete at the state contest held in conjunction with the Houston Livestock Show on Monday, March 17. Consol will be competing against the top 20 teams from across the state for more than $75,000 in scholarships and prizes.
The tractor technician contest consists of three parts. The first two components of the competition consist of separate 100-question examinations. The first exam contains questions about hydraulics, engines, power trains and electrical systems as it pertains to modern tractors. In addition, they had to take a second 100-question examination over 20 different tractor components.
Lastly, the team had to identify five major malfunctions of a tractor stated on a service work order, perform preoperational checks, repair the malfunctions using the service manual, operators manual and diagnostic tools, and then drive the repaired tractor on a specified course. They had only 30 minutes to perform the final portion of the contest.
