The top cop at Texas A&M is calling it a career.

University Police Chief Elmer Schneider is retiring after 42 years at UPD.

A member of the Aggie Class of 1971, Schneider began at the department in 1970 as a dispatcher, according to his biography on the university's website. He eventually became an officer and worked his way up the chain of command.

Schneider is the senior leader in local law enforcement, and has served on a wide range of committees and teams committed to protecting the campus and region. He has won multiple honors from his university.

A retirement reception will be held Friday, April 5 starting at 3:00 p.m. at the Annenberg Presidential Conference Center, which is part of the Bush Library complex on campus.
