Aggies Hold Roll Call to Remember Fallen Veterans

Updated: Tue 8:41 AM, Nov 13, 2012

A roll call was held on the Texas A&M campus to honor the thousands of service men and women who have died in Afghanistan since the 9/11 terror attacks.

It took three hours to read out the names of the 2,150 fallen soldiers, including 27 Aggies.

“You can ask everybody around here what veterans day means to them. I guarantee you a veteran has affected their lives in some way,” said Trey Martinez, Texas A&M Corps of Cadets.

But as people came and went throughout the day, one student stayed.

“I feel like it’s really important that these names are called out and that they're heard by someone. Each time they call a name, in my head, I whisper "here" because I think it’s important that even though they've died for their country, they're still here with us,” said Hannah Owen, Texas A&M student.

Owen stood in Rudder Plaza for the whole roll call, wearing her brother's army tags around her neck like she does every day.

“I want people to remember my brother if he ever gets injured or dies. He's fighting for people he doesn't even know and he loves it,” said Owen.

The roll call was led by A&M's Tillman Military Scholars. Pat Tillman was a professional football player who left his career to serve after 9/11. He died in Afghanistan. The Pat Tillman foundation is an organization that provides scholarship funds to veterans and active military members. There are only five Tillman Military Scholars at A&M.
