Police Chief Ray Schultz says an Albuquerque police officer is in good condition after being shot and rushed to emergency surgery.

Schultz and Albuquerque Mayor Richard Berry said they both visited the wounded officer Monday morning and he appeared in "good spirits."

Authorities say the officer, whose name has not been released, was shot in the lower back. The shooting occurred around midnight Sunday as officers who responded to a report of an alleged assault were approached by other people who wanted to report a theft.

Schultz says officers were talking to people and taking reports when they heard gunshots and took cover.

Schultz says the wounded officer did feel numbness but seems to be recovering.

No arrests have been made.
