The Pentagon's inspector general said Monday an investigation found the U.S. Military Academy's superintendent engaged in unspecified misconduct, while the Army said the probe cleared him of having an improper relationship.

A spokeswoman for the inspector general said she couldn't initially release details of the findings involving Lt. Gen. David H. Huntoon.

The Army said the inspector general looked into an allegation of an improper relationship involving Huntoon, but the claim was never substantiated.

The inspector general's investigation occurred last year and Huntoon has no pending disciplinary action against him, said George Wright, an Army spokesman at the Pentagon.

"Lieutenant General David Huntoon plans to retire this summer after 40 years of honorable and distinguished service," Wright wrote in an email to The Associated Press.

He said the timing of the retirement was planned when Huntoon took over as superintendent in 2010 and wasn't related to the investigation.

Bridget Serchak, a spokeswoman for the Department of Defense's inspector general, said reports of investigations that substantiate senior official misconduct are made available through the Freedom of Information Act. The AP has filed a request for documents related to the investigation, which was first reported by the Washington Post on Saturday.

Huntoon graduated from West Point in 1973 and became the 58th superintendent of the venerable academy on the Hudson River in July 2010.

Huntoon had been director of the Army Staff in Washington, D.C. He was involved in Operation Desert Storm and was commandant of the U.S. Army War College.
