AUSTIN, Texas (AP) The chief of a Central Texas police department has cracked down on officers and support staff who drive drunk and says they face dismissal.
The Austin American-Statesman reports Austin police Chief Art Acevedo on Wednesday announced the updated policy to employees.
Acevedo provided details in a video to the department's 2,300 sworn law enforcement and support personnel. The zero tolerance policy applies regardless of whether criminal charges are dismissed.
Effective immediately, if an internal police administrative investigation finds that an officer or civilian employee drove drunk - he or she will automatically be fired. Previously, the Austin police chief had discretion on whether to fire officers for a DWI arrest.
Officials with the Austin Police Association oppose the changes, saying there are extenuating circumstances to every case.
