An officer and sergeant with the Bryan Police Department have announced their retirement from the force.

Sergeant Robert Smith Retires after 28 Years:

Sergeant Robert Smith started with the Bryan Police Department in September of 1984. He served as a patrol officer for four years. In 1988 Sgt. Smith became a Juvenile Crime Prevention Officer where he implemented the D.A.R.E program in Bryan Elementary and Junior High Schools.

Robert, who has a black belt in Tae Kwon Do and Chung Do Kwan, became a PPCT Defensive Tactics Instructor and was instrumental in training many officers throughout his career. He was promoted to Sergeant in patrol in 2002. In 2008 Sergeant Smith was transferred to the Training/Recruiting Department and then to Criminal Investigation Division in 2009.

He later returned to the Patrol Division where he finished out his career.

During his career, Sgt. Smith received recognition for his exceptional work and service to the community:

1988 Received Outstanding D.A.R.E Officer Award in Tulsa, OK
1989 Certificate of Recognition for Outstanding Service by Chief Phelps for a Karate exhibition and work with the kids at Ben Milam School.
1991 Enrique Camarena Law Enforcement Award for drug awareness
1991 Bryan Police Officer of the Year Award
1996 Life Saving Award for saving a 2 year old child who was choking on candy.
2000 Campus Crime Stoppers Recognition Award by the Brazos County Sheriff’s Office
2002 Assisted in the 2002 Texas Police Games as a Martial Arts Event Coordinator
2004 Tae Kwon Do & Chung Do Kwan 8th Dan Grand Master Black Belt Defense Tactics Instructor
2009 Community Service Citation for his service over an extended period of time with Brazos County Juvenile Detention, Brazos Valley Mental Health Retardation Center, and Missionary work
2009 Jefferson Award Recipient for Public Service
2012 Brazos NAACP Community Service Award

Sgt. Smith is a respected leader and minister in this community. His work with our youth and his experience as a Martial Arts Expert has benefited this department and community as a whole.

He leaves us to continue in his ministry in Kilgore, TX

Officer Albert Neveu Retires after 18 Years:

Officer Albert Neveu worked for the Bryan Police Department as a Reserve Officer from 1981 to 1987. He then went to work as a Patrolman for Texas A&M University Police from 1987 to 1993 before returning to the Bryan Police Department as a Patrol Officer in January of 1994. Officer Neveu became a Detective with the Criminal Investigation Division in 2000. In 2004 Officer Neveu returned to patrol where he finished out his career. Alongside his normal duties Albert served as the Spanish Citizen’s Police Academy Coordinator from 1994-2009

During his career, Albert received recognition for his exceptional work and service to the community:

1998 Departmental Citation for DWI enforcement and exception amount of arrests, citations, reports filed, and calls answered.
2001 Received his Peace Officer’s Master Certificate
2005 Community Service Citation for his dedicated service to the Spanish Citizen’s Police Academy and positive impact on the citizens in our community.

Albert was a loyal and dedicated employee. He served on the Crisis Negotiation Team from 1998 to 2011. His excellent communication skills and his love of interacting with the community made him a vital asset to the team. Albert also spoke fluent Spanish and would frequently respond to other officer’s investigations to assist in translation.
