Scattered areas of rain & a few thunderstorms are moving across the Brazos Valley this afternoon. Later today & into the evening hours, while the coverage is expected to remain low (20%) -- should a thunderstorm develop, it could become severe. Large hail & damaging winds are the main concern -- however an isolated tornado threat cannot be ignored. Strong thunderstorms are possible overnight & early Monday morning, as well (50%).
The intersection has been reopened.
On Tuesday, February 19, 2013 at approximately 0947 hours, a major accident occurred in the intersection of FM 2818 and Sandy Point Rd. A 2005 6-ton Aggieland Wrecker capable of towing an 18-wheeler was traveling Southbound in the 2200 block of Harvey Mitchell Parkway/FM 2818. A 2006 Ford Brazos County Road and Bridge truck was traveling Eastbound in the 5000 block of Sandy Point Rd. The driver of the Ford failed to yield right of way and proceeded across the intersection and was struck by the other vehicle. The driver of the Aggieland Wrecker was transported with non-life threatening injuries.
The driver of the Brazos County Road and Bridge truck, identified as 61 year old Bobby Joe Green of Bryan was transported to St. Joseph Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
12:10 p.m. Update:
The intersection remains closed at this time for reconstruction and will remain closed for the next several hours. Please avoid travelling down FM 2818 between Hwy 6 and Hwy 21.
Brazos County Judge Duane Peters is confirming that a male employee of Brazos County has been killed in a car accident Tuesday morning.
Judge Peters told News 3 that the man worked for Brazos County Road and Bridge.
Authorities closed the the road around 9:45am Tuesday.
The Brazos County employee was driving a pick-up truck when it collided with a tow truck used for hauling 18-wheelers.
Both drivers were taken to a local hospital. Bryan Police Department says the driver of the pickup suffered potential life-threatening injuries. The tow truck driver was not seriously injured.
Drivers are asked to avoid the area for the next couple hours while BPD investigates the accident.
