HUNTSVILLE Brenda Bowman and her husband were making a trek from their home in Buffalo to Liberty County Thursday, but their stop in Huntsville made the journey much more special than they thought.
As her husband was parking the car at the Sam Houston statue in Huntsville, Bowman walked into the visitors center. She had seen the story on KBTX that "Big Sam" was closing in on receiving his one millionth visitor to sign in at the visitors center, but she didn't think she'd make it in time to make history.
But she did when her signature was the one millionth to go into the visitor center's books.
Bowman's stop in Walker County brings to a close a countdown by the staff over the last few weeks as the visitors kept coming to see the 67-foot-tall tribute to a Texas legend.
The statue was delivered to his spot on I-45 in 1994, a creation of artist David Adickes.
